Sitting on the panel for a designer, I was given these directions: “I’m not looking for your typical runway model, I’m looking for the typical person that you would see on the streets. Not only were we stunned as judges, but we asked questions as we seek understanding. Modeling has become a revolving door for those of all genders, races and ages. If you think deeply about it, the typical person that you see in the mall or on the streets is usually the consumer. Truthfully, most consumers aren’t tall, blonde and slim. They’re shirt, tall, plus size, skinny, dark, light and of multiple races! So why appeal only to the runway fashion model audience? In addition to making sense of this, it only right to have castings correspond to those of variety.
This is good, really good. This reopens and reconnects the industry to allow those to achieve their dreams who aren’t lengthy and proportionally gifted. It inspires those who have been told that they are not model material, too short, too old, too heavy or too dark to chase dreams that were once unreachable. Not only is the job market expanding, designers are also seeking an increase in sales and creativity because of this.
What to do next? Get out there and give things a shot! Aspiring model, this is “your time”!! The barriers have been broken and the walls have been destroyed! Get out to your next casting call and give it all you have. The industry is open to everyone and designers are looking for all types of models! If you have style and a sense of fashion, anything can happen!!!
